Needing some help. I have a 1991 4dr 4x4 explroer. First problem is the front brakes have started getting a squeal like when the pads are wore down to metal on metal. But, they are over half good. The rotors keep getting a "glaze" on them. So, we surface the rotors and the pads and it works for a few days. Then back to the squeal. Second problem, and I have posted this before, is when the unit sits after running for about 15-30 min, then go to re-start, it stubbles and coughs then dies. It acts like its vapor locking in the fuel system. It has new fuel regulator, replaced the injectors, newer fuel pump, changed fuel filter, recent tune-up. The only time this happens is when it sits for the above mentioned time. No other conditions cause this. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks.

For the brakes, I would replace the pads, they're cheap enough not to be wasting time trying to reuse them. Also, use the anti-squeak membrane material (blue or red paste) on the backs of the pads, that helps tremendously. Also, check to be sure the caliper pins are good (rubber inside is in good condition), clean and lubricated. Clean (wire brush) all caliper mounting points.

Hope this helps.

Do your brakes feel funny? If so, your rear brakes may not be working, and all the braking action is in the front, causing them to overheat and glaze over...it happened to me. It's a long shot, but worth looking at.

AS for the fuel problem, the best first thing to do when you suspect a fuel problem is to put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see what it is doing. Of course, because of the intermittent nature of the problem you want to be sure to do this when the problem exists.

Thanks for the info. The rear brakes have been checked and are working fine. Could the rotors have something in the metal causing this problem? I doubt it. More info please.
