ok so i bought a 1994 ford explorer for 650 bucks cause it runs real good but the only problem with it was the automatic hubs were not locking. so i was talking to a friend and he said put it in 4 low and reverse and they should lock up well i did that and i herd a grinding noise come from the hubs possibly but still not engaged and it wouldnt come out of 4 low so i turned the truck off and then turned it back on and the 4x4 lights in the truck were now off but its still stuck in 4 low and i need to know possible problems or solutions thx guys

if it is "auto select" ie push button you have to first press and hold the 4low button and then the 4x4 button. My kiddo had the same problem last week. If still not disengaging then you will have to pull the shift motor and manually swith it under the truck with a pliers.

It is very possible that the shift motor decided to take a dump on you when in 4L, but more likely that you are not holding the 4L button in long enough.

no i have had it in neutral and held it their for a good 15 20 seconds nothing ive had it in and out of 4 low before but the lights for the switches went out and now i cant do anything and its stuck in 4 low but ill try the shift motor

it prolly took a dumper on you then... But as long as you are down there.... there is a fantastic "Shift Motor Rebuild" sticky in either the "Transmissions and Transfer Cases" Section or the Gen 1 Explorer section. It literally takes 17 minutes to rebuild this thing.

Good Luck and let us know what happens

so i got the shift motor off but it doesnt want to go into 2wd by pliers ?

you can try to rock it back and forth - Reverse, Drive, reverse, drive, etc...

k got it but now the shift motor woulnt go back into 2wd she is seized is it alright to have the motor off of it

yes the shift motor doesn't seal the transfer case. So the transfer case seized? or the shift motor?

shift motor i put a flat head in the shift motor to try and rotate it to 2wd but it would not budge
