Hi, im new here, and in need of help... I bought a 95 explorer about 5 months ago and the check engine light has been on the entire time. I know the obd2 port under the dash won't do me any good. When i brought it to a shop, they did the paper clip jumper on the obd1 and fried my computer. I bought a new ECM crom ebay, and still cant get anything out of the engine light... any ideas?

If they fried the computer then why was it you instead of them buying a new ECM (assuming crom means from)? Seems like they are not only obligated to do that but also get the code off if that's what you paid them to do.

Anyway did you see this topic? :

Supposedly the OBDII port under the dash isn't used for OBD and the connector to use is the EEC IV plug under the hood on the drivers side toward the back near the master cylinder. I never owned a pre-OBDII Explorer so that's all I've got...

Notes on pulling EEC-IV codes

The 1995 Explorer has the eeciv module and is obd1. The engine codes are read with the connector under the hood, the abs, air bag, and gem module are read with the obd2 connector under the steering wheel. The 1996 Explorer has the eecv module and all systems are read with the obd2 connector under the steering wheel.

The engine light should come on in all cases, for a few seconds, when you start the engine. If not the bulb may be burned out

^ Welcome to the forum, but you are necro'ing posts from 5+ years ago, whatever the problem was, they've moved on by now.

I do appreciate the idea of adding info in case someone else comes across this topic in the future, but it is somewhat redundant in that the forum has known this issue for ~20 years. ;)

Easy to reply to an old thread, it was the first thing I did. I'm glad there is a lot of expertise on OLD Explorers, I wouldn't want a new one if I could afford it. Learned so much here. Who knew, a vehicle 23 yrs old would be so complicated?

Its only complicated if you let it be
To me its all just nuts and bolts

I was that person looking for information, and all I found was misinformation. After a lot of research, I found the answers. I'm hoping to help the next guy like me that's restoring a1995. Without this vital information, all the 95's left will go to the junkyard without a second thought.

Welcome to this Forum. You should be able to do much better in your search for information here.

Good luck.

The voice of experience! I'm still much more familiar with 70s cars. Did replace the turn signal stalk, plugs and wires, and washer pump on my 96 Taurus but that was it. You all are helping me on the Ex learning curve.

They are pretty complicated for their time. Tons of electronics. And in the 90s, all this knowledge was not available. Want to read ABS codes? the dealer was pretty much the only option.

Take the premium radio for example, it requires wires to be run to the rear of the truck! No simple radio install there!

Glad my stock radio/cassette/cd works! I also have the 5-disc CD changer in the console. If anyone wants the 5-CD changer, tell me how to remove it without messing up the rest of the radio/cassette stock setup, and it's yours for the price of shipping. I don't want to play CDs, if I want to in the future the 1-CD in the radio would be enough. Rather have more room in the console!

Only 95-97 JBL premium sound had that issue. I see why they did away with it, I doubt many cars on the road are set up like that.
The radio acts as a "Keyboard" and the rear unit connects to the antenna, powers speakers, etc. You would never tell by looking at it. For 95, that is about as advanced as you can get.

The CD changer, volume, etc are controlled by a special Ford Audio protocol. For the above radio, It wouldn't be impossible to take an android head unit and have it send those signals into the bus and completely replace the front unit with no speaker wiring. Zero market but a fun project.

Someone actually replaced the CD changer with an Arduino to play MP3s. That could be done with your 98 too.

I have a 1995 Explorer XLT, 4.0 with the same set up. Would you be interested in selling OEM radio and CD player?

Hi, and welcome! Not sure you'd want my OEM radio as it has the common problem: the time/radio station display is usually blank, every so often it displays. It does sound fine to me. Anyway, I'm still using it to play cassettes! (Radio sucks here, and the oldies stations now only go back to the 80s, aargh!) Although you'd be welcome to the 5-disc CD changer in the console, I still don't know how to disconnect it from the system without messing up my OEM radio system. Also, mine is a 98 XLT 4.0 SOHC, cannot tell you if it is the same as yours. The list of things to fix on my X is getting longer, and time shorter as I have to move out at the end of the month!
