I just purchased my 95' ex with 98000 miles. Everything seems fine, although the check engine light comes on sometimes while driving. The tranny shifts ok, but is kinda load. My question " how good are these tranny and what can I do to in maintanance to get a few more years out of it. This is my 1st explorer.

Thanks for any suggestion. also any idea on the check engin light?

Welcome to the site!

Congrats on your new Explorer as well.

As far as tranny's go, they are a sort of weak link when it comes to Explorers. Over the years, Ford became better and better with the transmissions they used.

I have a 96' with 116,000 miles under the belt and everything is running ok. Have a trustworthy shop change the fluids (if it needs it) and tell you what they think.

Some people have gotten some impressive mileage out of their tranny's. Every vehicle has it's drawbacks and this maybe one for the Explorer.

As far as the check engine light goes, go to a good place that won't charge you an arm and a leg to get your codes run. It could be any number of things, but you are better finding out exactly what the issue may be. It could be that you just need some new O2 sensors or something simple.

Good luck and congrats again!

Happy postin'!:)
