1996 Aerostar. Low fuel pressure issue while driving at highway speed.

this engine misses badly but on an intermittent basis. it generally happens at highway speeds (45 to 65 mph) and usually when beginning to pull a grade the check engine light activated one time only and the code indicated that low fuel pressure was detected I changed the fuel filter out recently with no luck. I don't know whether to head in the direction of the fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump. When it begins to miss all I do is back off on the gas and it stops missing it really doesn't do this at speeds under 40 or 45 mph maybe I should change the gas cap before I do anything else does this problem sound familiar to anyone? thks

Welcome to this forum! The title of your thread was edited to explain the issue. Check the fuel pressure with a test gauge. Did you cut open the old filter to examine its condition? Maybe the filter inside the fuel tank is partially clogged? What is the code number?
