Hi,
I'm looking at buying a 1996 Explorer XL 4.0L AWD. It has just under 124,000 miles. It has a few nicks and scratches on the outside. The headliner is really torn up and all four of the door pulls are ripped and have been bolted on (effective, but not pretty.) The wholesale dealer was asking $2,450. Due to the issue below, he offered to add a 6 month 7,500 drivetrain warranty with a $100 deductible for $50 ($2,500 total).
The vehicle has no problem when put into manual 2nd gear. However, when it is put into drive or manual 1st gear there is sometimes a delay in the vehicle moving forward. It lasts a second or less then your hear a thud from underneath the vehicle and it moves without issue. I have taken the vehicle on two test drives and the problem has happened early in the run, but goes away after the vehicle is driven more. In other words the problem is very difficult to duplicate once it happens. The transmission fluid is a beautiful red color without debris.
Any thoughts about what might cause this issue or the value in the deal offered would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
