1997 engine swap into 1991 sport,4x4

can anybody give advice as to what i need to change over from 91 engine to 97 engine to ensure it will not burn itself up because of computer management system. i bought a 1997 with 52k miles, my son ran the original hot and cracked head. it has 185k on it but ran like a top until he ran hot. please give me some direction if you know about this type of swap.
