1997 XLT stuck in 4wd low?

So I'm assuming you removed the t-case and the shift rail/rod is at 4HI but the t-case is still in 4LO?

Well at this point, the problem is mechanical and you can either replace the transfer case or open it and see what's going on.

If I do decide to open it up I will definitely be using the transfer case diary.....just not sure I'm ready for all that. Thanks for your help!

I looked online and I can get a reman case for $675, do you or anyone know what a shop charges to rebuild one? I'm also checking on a used one but I don't know what would be the best route........ I don't really need 4wd I would just like to be able to drive it right now.

If I were to open my TC would anything "fly" out?

Tuning in kinda late... Yes, if the shift motor is positioned properly for 4high, and the shift rail is properly positioned for 4high, but the transfer case is in 4low, then there's an internal issue and it needs to come apart.

I think there's some more troubleshooting though... With the shift motor un-bolted from the t-case, have you tried cycling from high to low and low to high? Does the motor turn like it should?

yes, I think so, although I haven't watched it only heard it making noise.

I am having same issue with 97 Ford Explorer Limited stuck in 4 low, tried foot on brake and trans in neutral, even removed shift motor to try and manually get it to move, no luck....
