1998 Explorer
Good afternoon all,

I have a 1998 Explorer with the SOHC 4.0L engine. As with all other Explorers of this year the timing chains went out and took out some valves in the process. There is alot of aluminum that went through the engine and I think replacement is my best option.

My question is that I have found a 4.0 SOHC out of a 2000 Explorer and was wondering if the block and heads are the same so that I can put all my parts on it and get the vehicle back on the road.

Any response would be appreciated.

Thanks

Long blocks are identical

I believe that the long blocks on all of the SOHC V6 engines (Ranger, Explorer, Mountaineer, Mustang, and maybe the Rover) are identical. Your 1998 has VIS and the 2000 does not so the PCM and intake manifold differ. Also, your 1998 has a return fuel system and the 2000 has a returnless system. Just strip everything off your old engine and bolt onto the new engine and you should be in good shape. I suggest that you pull the valve covers on the new engine to inspect the guides and also the front cover to check the primary chain tensioner. The 4WD engine has a balance shaft and the 2WD engine does not.

welcome
