After m year long search I finally found a lift for my 1998 Ford Explorer 2wd! I called FORD with a random question and also asked if they new a good place local to do lifts. I called this place and FOUND IT!

$1300 Installed
3.5 inch Lift
Front Upper Control A arms
Add-a-leaf rear
(4) Rancho 5000 shocks

Dependable Off-Raoad
Orange, CA 714-771-1490
Contact: Steve Elliot

He suggested I get the lift and add 16" wheels with 32.5x11.5 tires and it would look damn good! There were pictures of older model lifted Explorers on the wall when I got there, I loved that! I am seriously thinking about doing this right away but gonna give myself a few days to think it over. Well I found one please give Steve Elliot and tell him that your friend Jordan with the blue 98 Explorer told you to call if you all dont mind because he said I could get a discount if I bring people in. Hate to sound like a mooch but I think you all would do the same if you could! I will post my decision soon!

Jordan (The now HAPPY CAMPER)

Also, if you want specifics call Steve @ Dependable because I am still learning what a Upper Control Arm is! hehe

Dude, I had talked to those people at the beggining of the year and they had nothing for me. I'm not sure if I talked to the wrong guy or if they just don't have one for 4x4 model.

Good luck, and don't forget to send pictures!!

After careful thought I have decided not to get the lift kit at this time. I think I will wait for Rancho to make something really nice or I will just buy a 4x4. I do think in the mean time I am gonna get some Rancho or Edelbrock Shocks.

Jordan, thoses pictures on Dependable Off-Road walls are my Explorer if you want to know. They or I should say Darien Gagnon who wants worked there did all of the work on my truck. My truck is in all of their ad's also.
Ask Steve who I am, and he will tell you. Also ask him for a Dependable Off-Road shirt. The truck on the shirt is mine also.
Good Luck!

Jordan,
You may want to consider not waiting for Rancho...I doubt they'll have a lift for a 98 anytime within the next 5 years...hell, look at the fact that there is still no lift for the 95's and they have been out almost 5 years...Also before you buy a 4x4, you may want to reconsider just keeping your truck and making it a prerunner. I've seen a prerunner Toyota running 33s with a 4.56 rearend and an ARB locker do the same stuff most 4x4s can do, all you have to do is drive smart and get a winch or tow straps just in case. Plus you lack the weight of the transfer case and other items for 4 wheel drive which is good. Plus, I've found that sometimes those custom lifts can be a little nicer than the mass produced ones, because the makers put a little love into each one... Dead Link Removed. I'd gladly drive a prerunner 98 running 33s.

Hey,

What does a 4.56 rearend mean? You mean get some 4.56 rear end gears? Where and who could install them since I dont think I could. How much?

Whats an ARB Locker? How much and what does it do?

Call me dumb but I am still learning, thanks!

Jordan

Does this mean you think I should still get the lift kit?

I have to agree with Mat R on the point of having something custom made is sometimes better. After looking at Ricks rig on the site, and looking at my lift which was designed by Superlift I can see a major differnce in the quality and thought that went into the lift. Most people that custom make parts do it with the intent that you will use it hard off-road. The bigger companies often times use parts and designs that are weeker for the ease of installing them. If I was to do my lift all over again, I probably would have learned how to weld and made some of the parts so that they are better then the ones I got wiht my kit.

Jordan, I think I paid around $1,100 for my 5.5 SuperLift maybe more, that was 5 years ago, things do go up. I probably would not spend it on a 2wd. You also have to consider the cost of new rim's and tires. That could easily be another grand or more. It all depends on what you really want. I might make one suggestion though. You made a statement back on one of your other posts that you were interested in buying a sport's car and you were planning on spending around $20,000-25,000. Why don't you buy a used 91-94 4x4 and make all of the mod's (custom & aftermarket) that you want. I did this on my 91 (all though it was not used, I bought mine new) I spent around the same amount of money(over and above the cost of the truck) that you want for a sport's car. I got what I wanted a truck that will do the hard stuff, sound great when its running, extra horse power, and yet street liveable. Thats my .02 cents worth.

I would have to agree with Paul, I have a 94 EB Sport and have spent slightly more than $20,000 over the cost of the truck and ended up with a vehicle very compairable to Pauls (although I have to admit his is better), it is an awsome trail vehicle and still is capable of doing the daily chores.
