This is a tough one to write, but I have a 1998 V6 RWD Bright Red Explorer and she's blown her overdirve sprag in the transmission. The transmission shop quoted me $4551 for a new transmission and another $4500 for a new engine gasket. I could do these things myself but I don't have the tools or time to do it.

If there's anyone in the Minneapolis MN area that could help or would like to give this beauty a good home and give her the care she needs (Not free of course but it's a good condition otherwise) please let me know! She has 176,000 Miles and only runs for now in 1st and 2nd gear and can only use OD at 55 mph on the highway. Where ever she goes at this point, she stays and will need a rebuilt transmission.

Any advice in this car market would be appreciated, thanks!

What's the name of that tranny shop so I'll know to never go there to have work done. Those prices are completely ridiculous. I assume what's meant by "new engine gasket" is a head gasket? Even so, with 176K miles on a SOHC engine and, I assume, typical MN rust, I'd have to think long and hard whether to sink even a couple thousand into it. Wish I could help. Best of luck.

Wow. Most shops you could get a full rebuild with removal and replacement $2500 or less
