- 1999 Explorer XLT 2wd
Im sure this has been covered somewhere, and forgive me if I shouldn't post this here. I am new to the forum and new to Fords for that matter (even though I have worked for them for the past 3 years).
In the process of getting a family members explorer for myself. A little background- its a 1999 Explorer XLT (SUPER CLEAN) 2wd 4.0 V6 OHV with 68,000 miles, one owner. Of course I cant leave good enough alone, and already have plans for a Baja bumper or front brush guard, roof basket, small lift (enough for 31's) and of course lights. This got me thinking, maybe I should convert it to 4wd. I looked at my friends 1999 Ranger 4wd to get some ideas. I was surprised to see both had torsion bars. The front ends look IDENTICAL except for the upper control arm looks a little different, and of course the spindle and hub. But it looks like it would be a relatively easy swap if I had all the parts off his ranger. I know a SAS would be the way to go, but I am really not looking to do anything to extreme. Being low mileage I want to maintain its RELIABILITY, this will be my daily. I really just want some input and ideas, I doubt myself and usually need my hand held through a project, so maybe this will be easy enough for me to tackle. And no I don't want to sell it and buy a 4wd.
Thanks in advance,
