1999 Explorer jumps into 4WD

Twice so far the vehicle just jumped info 4WD. At least that's what the mechanic is suspecting. I've turned on the 4WD backed it up a few yards and took it back out. My question is, can the 4WD be disconnected. And if so, would it be costly?
