Hi Guys, and Gals...

I'm a freshman to this site and have never posted before, so I am looking forward to mingling, and hopefully contributing at some point, as well as benefitting.

So....my problem is with my 1999 Ford Explorer XLT rear window wiper arm and blade. When I turn it on, it doesn't navigate close to the glass and does not wipe properly. It appears the thing to do is to bend the arm, making it wiper closer on the glass, but in reading a couple other postings, it appears that is not the cure. What causes that? And if I replace it with a new arm assembly, is it apt to cure the problem or could the problem be in another part of the mechanism. If a new part, where is the best place to get it?

Thanks for any input.

i know theres a spring behind there to help hold tension check that...if its bad or worn replace the whole arm..can probably get one from the junkyard pretty cheap

If you look at the back of the arm, with the arm bent back on its hinge, you'll see a hose between two stop arms. The ends of those have small 1/8" projections. Those are the stops that set tension on the glass. There is a line cast in each arm, you grind the projections down to the line(about 1/8") to get full glass tension, or:

How to properly grind arm down

How do you disassemble the arm to properly grind it down? I've been grinding my arm down as I have the same issue as everyone else does with not full wiper coverage and I am not able to get to part of the fingers to grind the whole finger down. How do you properly do that? Do you need to use a dremel or can you just use sandpaper?

I know this is an old thread, but I had some input for anyone looking for help. I had a different problem with my '99 Sport. The pivot point at the base of the wiper arm had rusted and siezed. I worked it back and forth (working the pivot point) while repeatedly applying penetrating oil until it was pivoting properly, and it hasn't given me the same problem since.
