1999 sport
Maybe you guys can help me out here since this seems like the most logical place to ask these questions :) . But i've recently been looking into buying an explorer thought about a newer body style 02+ but the ones in my price range have 89,000+ on the clock and i've read about some problems with the trannys and wantnot on them so i probably won't look any farther into a newer one.

But i found a 1999 explorer sport a few days ago on one of the local lots around here it is right here
http://www.coughlinford.com/used_vehicle_details.htm?vehicleId=32176e114046381e001bd42763a9986e

It looks mint besides a few scratchs on the drivers side and a few nicks here an there. What you would expect from a vehicle that is 6-7 years old now. But i test drove it and it rides real nice has a low wurring sound thought maybe that was the tires or maybe it was the 4wd nothing that sounds bad atleast to me. But is it worth that price? We're trading a 2000 neon in on it, the sales guy estimated it being worth $2100 the manager was gone for the day so it wasn't appraised properly, i was guessing more $2500 but you know it that works  . I was thinking of offering $5000 plus our trade in so that would equal $7100 from the estimates of the sales person. Should i go lower?

Oh and how long do these v6's last in explorers? I've read mixed things on it so i figured i'd just ask. I know the good ol' 5.0's will last a longggg time but i've never owned a ford v6 so i don't know about them.

Thanks

DO you know which 4.0L engine it has????

4.0L ohv or 4.0L sohc

The 4.0L sohc is a better engine, than the 4.0L ohv..............and I personally like 4dr vehicles...........does it come w/ the tow hitch.............IF you're serious about towing, get the V8.

Price......well, you could see here:

Looks like it's the SOHC that's what i'm getting from the vin. number.

Having just been through all this, I found Edmunds and KBB to be a bit low, and NADA to be way high. Averaging the three is about right.
YMMV

Couple of suggestions: make sure you get a CARFAX report on it. If the dealer won't give it to you, walk away. In the report, look for stuff like, collision damange, leased, auctioned...etc. You can also look at CARS.COM to see what similiar vehicles are going for in your area. Keep in mind you are looking at a Sport which brings less $$ than the 4dr. I'd also want to do some checking on the 'wurring' sound you referred to.

I would go to this website and lookup the Oasis forum. They will look up the VIN and tell you what has been done to the truck. It looks very nice, watch for rust (surface) on the step bars.

Blue Book is just short of 8 grand, but with gas prices and the huge number of used Explorers and SUV's out there, plus the noises and scratches this one's making, I wouldn't offer anything more than 5500, including the trade in. Nobody gets anything close to Blue Book on a dime a dozen SUV like this one.

I bought the exact same truck in white for $5800 two weeks ago. Mine has almost 72k on it. I got jerked around a little bit too. I KNOW for a fact that they owned my explorer for $4300, and a 98 5spd for $4800(about the same mileage). With used cars, its all about what the dealer owns the vehicle for. They had to do a little bit of work on mine when they brought it in, (brakes) so they jacked up the price a little bit. Then the dealer always has to make money on the car. They usually hold at least $750 on used cars. Sorry, Im jumping around a lot.

I think you should offer no more than $4000 and your trade.

The "wurring" sound i refered to sounds like tire noise, it will need new tires probably within 6months or so. They looked alittle thin on tread that might be the noise i know cheaper tires will make that kinda noise or old out of balance tires too. Could also be road noise i'm just not used to hearing. The more i have thought about it i will offer no more then 4000 + our trade in i think i will start out at 3500+trade in. And it does have some sur###e rust in the drivers door sill nothing real bad just a 1/4 sized spot, and yes the step bars do have some surface rust on them too not really noticable since the paint is still on it just bubbled up. And a nick on the bottom of the back hatch, noticable cause my g/f pointed it out. Oh and it seems to have the start of an exhaust leak idling when rev'ed on deacceleration of the motor you can hear it, something that will need replaced i'm sure within a year.

Nobody gets close to blue book on just about any used car i know that cause i've dealt with it many times on an 01 sonoma i had and my current 02 GTP. Dealerships are getting worse an worse to deal with. I doubt the stealership has anymore then 3500 wrapped up in this explorer it's on their under 10k lot and the guy said if you have a problem getting what he estimated finaced come back we'll work something out that tells me they can come off it alittle if not alot.

yeah man, good thinking. lowball them for sure. I would say 4k plus trade is absolutely the top price you should pay.

I bought my 00 sport last summer with 48000 miles for 5 grand, just to kinda give you an idea, it was from a dealership as well, no trade in.

I done some more research and that is about what they are getting for the sports 5-5500. I'm still looking but i have yet to find another truck/SUV in as good of shape as this one with 73k on the clock most have atleast 100k and if they have less then that then they are complete piles of crap. We test drove a 4dr. v6 explorer today 01 in fact same price as the 99 and it looked clean TILLLL you started it up lol. It had a few places on it but it was black stuck out like a sore thumb. We drove it and i notice the interior lights are on and the light says "door ajar" funny no doors are open. I tell the g/f to stop for a sec. at the stop sign i'll jump out and check the hatch, yeah that's what it was i thought no big deal. I go to close it and it won't close tried 5 times and it wouldn't latch so i left it. CD player face didn't light up no more and god only know's what else, many interior pieces were broke or had long since fallen off. Rattles galore too and it rode like it was on deflated airbags. The guy wouldn't budge on 7995 either what a joke, me an the g/f decided even the neon was worth more then that thing!

Been looking at jeeps too cause the 6's in those will last forever but like i figured all of them are over priced for what you get, put it this way i tested a 99 with 100k on the clock now it was nice i'd say comparable to the orange 99 explorer the guy wanted 10k for it  are you serious it's nice an all but it ain't that nice and he would not budge on the price.

Test drove another 99 jeep again today WOW what a freaking HEAP worse then the 01 explorer 10x's worse. First i walk up to it i'd say it's about a 100 footer Jeep. Price was 7895 and we decided to take it for a spin today. I check it over while the guy gets the plate for the test spin and i catch a glimpse of the lip on the rim WTF there's a 1-1 1/2 CRACK IN THE RIM  . So we drove it i quickly got on my cell and phoned someone and acted like i needed to be at work to help someone with the computer so we could get the heck outta there quick. Note things that were not good on the Jeep sliding moon roof did not slide, the DIC said it needed serviced, cracked rim, stained seats, the whole gauge cluster did not work infact i think the speedo was reading negative, burn holes through out. BUT it did have a good stereo in it LOL infact that was the guys selling point of the Jeep i think he mentioned it many times  .

I'm hoping the lot with that orange 99 explorer still has this F150 tomorrow i might check it out too. But it looks like if they will deal i'm going to buy that explorer outta the 6 SUV's we've driven the last few days it was by far the nicest with the least amount of miles.

For the price, options and miles that's a good deal. It does look good too. Just get a Oasis report to feel better about your purchase.
