Hello everyone,

My Explorer has been experiencing the flare for severalk months now. It's not a daily driver. I'm having a problem getting someone to change my valve body. I have taken the truck to several places and everyone wants to rebuilt the tranny. How soon should I get it fixed? I have put maybe 5,000 miles since the flare started. I notice that my flare is non-existant when the truck is still cold. Does anyone here know a transmission shop in MI that is familiar with the valve body issue with these transmissions.

Thanks in advance,
Gianni

You could remove the valve body, and send it to a place like Central Valve Bodies for testing. I think members of this site get a discount. If you want a shop to do the entire procedure, you could check WWW.ATRA.Com for a shop in your area.

I dropped the X at the closest tranny shop recommended by the ATRA website. I will post details as soon as I get a call ...

Thanks,
Gianni

Checked on the X after two days of being at the tranny shop ...

They can't really pinpoint the 2-3 flare even though I know the tranny is having the issue. I kinda explained the stuff that is posted here in regards to the flare. He told me he was gonna let me know tomorrow. If he doesn't find anything ... I'm just gonna tell the dude to rebuild my valve body and try to update it. Anything that I should at to a valve body rebuild list? I'm thinking about adding a shift kit.

Well ... they did finally notice the 2-3 flare, but my truck is not doing it all the time. The tranny guy told me that it could also be the something with the torque converter engagement. A year ago I replaced the fluid with the correct Mercon V and Lubeguard treatment. I thought the tranny had a slight shudder and I added a few ounces of Lubeguard's "Tranny Shudder Fixx". Maybe my fluid is too slippery and it's affecting the tranny 'cause the guy mentioned that he has never driven a 5R55E that shifted so smooth as mine.

He quoted me about 500-600 for a complete gove-over of my valve body with all the Sonnax updates and a decent shift kit.

I'm still debating if I should do it or just sell the truck (rarely use it and I could use the money).

What do you guys/gals think?
