2 Problems

My first problem is a grumbling sound when making a turn (right or left) from a dead stop. I was told that someone either filled or topped off my power steering unit with ATF. Is there a way to drain the system and fill it with power steering fluid? The steering is also very hard to turn when trying to get out of a parking spot.

The second problem is what sounds like a buzzing sound when the engine is at 1200 to 1500 rpm's. I can't figure it out and the best I can guess is that its coming from under the hood, somewhere.

Any help or advise from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2001 Sport, 4.0L

You should be able to drain/refill the PS system. Not sure how, but disconnect one of the lines would be my best guess.

There are actually machines that can power-flush your power steering (same as transmission, cooling system or engine oil). Might cost few bucks though...

It is normal to use ATF for power steering pump.

Basically power steering fluid is over priced ATF...

I have a 98 sport. I don't know if your's has the same problem but mine makes a grumbling/moaning noise only when I turn left. For mine, there is a TSB (99211) that calls for a new power steering hose, and a new bracket. Supposedly, the hose vibrates, which is what makes the noise.

According to my mech. atf and power steering fluid are different. I'll take his word for it.

Anyhooo, the problem's were resolved. Some jerk at a quik lube place, topped off the power steering reservoir. Right up to the cap. He went about 2 inch's above the max full line. I drained it, put new fluid in and the problem was resolved.

While the truck was up on the lift we searched for the annoying buzzing sound. We traced the buzz to one of the cats. The cats have a heat shield that sort of works like a clam shell. One of the clips that hold it closed opened up. We snapped it closed and the noise was finally gone.

I'm one happy X owner again!!
