Hello everyone! I am a new member. I have a 2000 Explorer (with a 5.0) that I actually bought just for the wiring harness and the ECU. I bought it from someone who said that the Engine was fried for $400. I had it towed to my house where it sat for a week or so before one of my friends asked if it would start. I hadn't tried since the previous owner had started taking the water pump off by removing the fan (he obviously didn't know what he was doing). So we got the fan back in place and put the battery charger on it. A few hours later, I got in it and it fired right up! It sounded great and the interior was almost spotless so my wife declared that I couldn't part it out. That was 54k miles ago and I love this thing! It's my go to vehicle now even though I have 3 other vehicles.
Oh yea, the problem that caused the guy to think that the head was warped was actually just a bad seal on the thermostat housing. It caused the steam to blow directly at the head. So let this be a lesson learned, those aluminum housings will get pitted over time. So if you have to change the thermostat, always check the sealing surface of the housing before you put it back together. If needed, you can sand the housing down just enough to give you a nice flat surface again.
