2000 Explorer with a vaccum leak.

I have a vaccum leak. The car bucks and kicks when cold. It will not stay running unless I keep ot reved to 2000 or higher. Then it sputters and back fires until warm. I can then turn off the car and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Once it sits it runs like a champ. I've been told I have a seal leak and when cold the seals shrink and air leak. When warm the seals expand and the leak is gone. My mechanic wants to charge me $400.00 to do the job. I just want to know how hard of a job is it? If it's just o-rings and hoses i can do it. I need a diagram with the parts and placements. Any ideas, I'm all ears.

Just ignore the parts about the tensioner and oil restrictor. Make sure that you have the required tools.

$400 total? Sounds like you're getting ripped off. Your "mechanic" isn't going to spend the time to clean out your carbon like Dale did. If you have the tools,heck even if you don't,harbor freight has a cheap,good set of torx sockets that you'll need. Autozone has the gasket set for about $20. With Dale's awesome pics and about $35 for parts and tools do it yourself. Dale tied things out of the way that your mechanic won't,saving time that he's still charging you for. It isn't at all a hard job to do.
