I previously had a 1999 XLT and it was much quieter than this 2wd 2000 XLS and I can't figure out why. Took it to my usual guy and he went over everything, even replaced motor mounts (he said they were fine, but I insisted). There's no rattle, tick, knock, whatever. It's just a really loud roar in the cabin.

Any ideas? Could it simply be less insulation compared to my XLT?

I'll say that it's a pleasure to get in my Saab after driving the Explorer. Such peace...

Sounds like your tires, my 01 has AT tires on the back and they make a real nice roar, they were on the front, and the newer tires on the rear, I switched them around

Roar changes more with speed or engine RPM? If speed, tires, if engine RPM, might have exhaust leak.

Check to see if the underhood insulation has been removed.
That makes a huge difference in vehicle noise.
