First I would like to thank all of the forum members for all the great info.
A couple of years ago the wife’s 2001 Explorer sport 4X4 started engaging very slow from reverse to forward. I searched the forum and found a recommendation to retorque the valve body bolts. Id did, and have not had a problem since until last Saturday. Thanks again for posting all the great info!
That was then, this is now... and I have a few questions.
(2001 Explorer Sport 4x4 4.0 Sohc, 102,000 miles)
The wife got home from a two hour trip to New York Saturday night. A mile from the house she said her truck felt sluggish from a stop and when shifted from 2-3 if revved up. Soon after the episode the O/D light began to blink.
I told her to park it and take the other car to work until I can fix it. I have been taking the Explorer for a 20 minute drive when I get home from work each night. I have not been able to get it to miss-shift until finally tonight.
This time I let it warm up for a good twenty minutes. Backed out of the driveway and pulled ahead to the stop sign in front of the house. I stepped on the gas went from 1-2 ok and 2-3 flared an easy 800 rpm. I hit the next stop an eighth mile ahead and when starting it felt like it was stuck in second gear. Soon after that the O/D light began flashing but the shifting was ok.
I checked the Trans fluid, it’s clean and smells normal, and the level was actually a quart low for some reason. I looked for leaks everywhere and found nothing obvious. I did find the lower Trans cooler bracket separated from the cooler but no leaks.
Yesterday I ordered the Ford VB update kit, separator plate/gasket, EPC solenoid, updated solenoid bracket and Superior shift kit. I have a spare Wix trans filter and five quarts of merc v, I was ready to do a fluid change in the next few weeks but it looks like I'll be doing a bit more work.
My questions are:
Should I also order the sonnex boost valve kit?
Is there a possibility all this will cure the problems with the Trans?
Of all the posts about this type of problem,I have not read about a Trans sticking in second gear. Is there another problem/part I need to address?
Thanks in advance,
Dan
