Hi all, im new to the forum and have been lurking for the last week or so while I diagnosed my engine woes in my 2002 Sport Trac.

While tooling around town my check engine light comes on but there is NO noticable engine issues at this point. WIthin about two miles drive to the nearest Orileys auto parts store I notices a slight mis and by the time I get to the auto parts store I had a pretty bad mis at idle only. Above 2500 RPM everything seemed fine.

Code scan using Orileys tools showed a misfire on #6 of my SOHC 4.0... After playing with a compression gauge and reading virtually nothing I limped the vehicle home (I was on a vacation) with the #6 injector unplugged.

Upon pulling off the drivers side valve cover I found that the top one coil of the exhaust valve spring on #6 was broke.

After spending $85 for a compression gauge, vaccum gauge and a new set of Motorcraft platnum plugs I found that all it really needed was a $4.25 valve spring from my local ford dealer (and about 10 hours of my time).

I was able to put a plastic zip tie on the valve stem (tightly) that allowed it to drop down about 1/2 and used a fiber optic scope to watch the valve head while my son was spinning the valve (while dropped against the zip tie). After watching the valve head sping a few rotations I had a good level of comfort that the valve wasnt bent and that the spring issue was just a random failure.

I would be interested in knowing how common this valve spring issue is AND if it is always the exhaust. I have to say that I am a bit surprised that the intake and exhause use the same spring.

Thanks for any input........ :salute:

This isn't a big problem. Actually almost unheard of in a stock configuration. As far as the intake and exhaust springs being the same that is common.-j
