need some help guys and girls, replacing the 4.6 in a 4x2 2002 explorer any tips would be a huge help, i havent done one before, know someone here probly has and knows all the tricks, thanks for any help

I had one done and the biggest take away was that I needed to get a 2002 engine as a replacement. No other year will directly work without effing around.

I got a great deal by sourcing a salvage yard who had the engine through www.carparts.com. Found a low mile motor and was able to negotiate a bit.

I'm going to be doing this as well. I'm not sure what is so special about the 2002 engine, but I'm not scared of a little effing around.

I will be swapping in an engine from a 2001 Bullitt Mustang. I will be using my original intake, not the special Bullitt one. I will also be switching over my oil pickup tube, oil pan, timing cover, and whatever else I see along the way.

I was interested in hearing some tips and tricks as well. I have everything removed except fuel lines, torque converter bolts, bellhousing bolts. About to lift it out in a couple of days.

i have removed the old one and installed new crate motor from ford, the only thing i can say is take your time, this was a 2 wheel drive auto the o2 sensors on the back of the block are a pain the 2 top bell housing bolts are hard to get to i removed the intake to get some room. i was also working on a lift so long extensions to get the drivers side out but wrench bent almost 90 on the open end worked great for the pass. side. all the plastic stuff is brittle i broke the dpfe and heater valve just trying to get hoses off being very gentle. I use some long picks and needle nose pliers to remove some of the connectors on various sensors. left tranny in place remove exhaust at manifold and behind the Y so i could move it around a bit.
