Questions about the new 2002 4x4 setup... the dealer claims that with the Explorer Limited and the 4x4, it's a full time all wheel drive setup. Is this correct? Or, did they carry over the rear-wheel-drive-until-the-rear-wheels-slip four wheel drive system from the last few years? I know you can't get the 4.6 with the Control Trac and Low Range, but is it finally a true AWD or is the dealer blowing smoke up my arse again?

gijoecam,
from what i have seen at the ford web site, there is no more AWD for the V8. it just lists 4x2 or 4x4. maybe the dealer was just referring to the automatic 4x4 of the older control trac. if you find out what the real deal with the 2002 please reply because i find this interesting.

i just remembered something. i dont think that the 2002 X has full time AWD beacuse the mountaineer (its twin) offers only 4x2 or AWD. so the X must still have the 2 speed transfer case. hope this helps.

From what I have read, the Explorer gets a modified version of the Control Trac to handle the increased power from the 4.6. I believe it now has a 2-speed transfer case and the automatic 4WD. The Mountaineer only comes in 2WD and AWD.

My dealer claimed that the 4x4 with the 4.6 was an awd for 2002. I walked through a lot yesterday, but all of them were SOHCs... no v8s to be found. :(

Still searching...

I hope this helps. I have a 2002 XLT 6cyl. with 4x4 auto, 4x4 high and 4x4 low options.

I drove a 2002 V8 Eddie Bauer. I had a Control-Trac type of 4x4 system. It was not AWD. The Mountaineer is AWD.

We also have a 2002 x w/the 4.6L V8 and it has the control trac type 4wd

My XLS is Auto, High or Low 4x4 if that helps. I don't think its AWD I'm pretty sure its just if the rear wheel slips it kicks in 4x4

The Explorers regardless of engine choice have ControlTrac with 4X4 Auto, 4X4 High and 4X4 Low buttons. The Mountaineers regardless of engine choice have full-time AWD.
