I have a 2002 Explorer 4.6 with a 5R55W (build date 10/01). I bought the truck with a bad transmission; I assume the intermediate band was broken because there was no 3rd gear. I replaced the transmission with a remanufactured unit in May of last year.
Under "normal" acceleration, it drives fine. Shift quality is good, firm but not harsh, and I've never noticed the transmission slipping under any conditions. It has always seemed to hold onto 2nd a little long when the transmission is cold (like first thing in the morning); after one or two stoplights it doesn't do it anymore, so I hadn't thought too much of it. Now, however, I have another problem, possibly related, that I think has been there since I installed the transmission; we've only put about 3000 miles on the truck since then, and it is mostly my wife's vehicle, so I've just now pinned down the symptoms for sure.
At wide open throttle, the transmission will not upshift from 2-3 or 3-4. If I punch it from a stop, it shifts 1-2 normally; in 2nd, it revs to about 5000RPM, but it will not continue to accelerate or shift into the next gear until I lift off the throttle somewhat, maybe to 3/4 or 1/2 throttle. Once I lift off so it will shift from 2-3, I can go WOT again in 3rd and it will again rev to 5000RPM, but from there it will not continue to accelerate or upshift to 4th until I lift off the throttle. I don't know whether it will shift from 4th to OD at WOT - I don't really want to drive that fast!
I had the Ford dealer flash the PCM with the latest revision right after I swapped the transmission. I'm fairly certain the fluid level is correct, although I'm going to check it tonight to make sure. The reman unit does have a 1 year/12,000 mile parts/labor warranty, so I'm going to take it to a good local tranny shop and have them take a look at it; however, I know there's a wealth of knowledge here, so I thought I'd see if any of you might have thoughts on the matter.
Thanks in advance for any help!
