2002 Explorer With 100k ... What Is the Recommended Service ?

Hey all
The Girlfriend just rolled 100,000 miles on her '02 Explorer XLT V-6 so along with the usual oil change, what else should be changed ? Diffs ? Trans ? Radiator flush ? It's still too cold for me to do any of these things so we're going to drop it off and get it done... I am always leery of taking ANYTHING to the dealership for service, but she claims oil changes are the same as everywhere else...is this the same with other fluid changes ?

Where do YOU all take your Explorers for routine service, and why ?

OK, bottom line...
Would you all take your Expy to the dealership, repair shop, or quick lube to get all fluids changed... and what price would I be looking at for everything ?

do it yourself and save the money for major repairs.

I would, but the weather here in the midwest is less than favorable for any outdoor activity...besides, it's all on the girlfriend's dime. lol

Any Oil changing shop will/should be running quite a few checks on all areas. Where a liquid goes, they usually check and top off or advise you what should be your next step. Now if you can take it in for a full service maintenance with a dealer, those usually run a steep price ($600 for my f150) but they basically are doing a full in detail tune up. now i don't know exactly what they do..so it very well could be a super overpriced oil change, but it has been my experience that the truck drives like it was brand new after whereas after i do a tune up at home, the truck just performs better than it did before i serviced it :) Again that is my experience. Plus the dealer service gives you a super car wash :) hahaahah

Always have make sure the there is a service in return for yours :D

Top dollar hose too....matter of fact i think they take it to closest house they can find :) just to drive it and waste gas!

3. Coolant Flush - if the coolant is not really dirty, I'll just do a coolant drain and fill
4. Fuel Filter - inexpensive for a shop
5. Transfer Case, Front and Rear diff flush and fill - inexpensive for a shop
6. Spark Plugs - inexpensive for a shop
7. Transmission Filter/Fluid change - inexpensive for a shop

Does it matter where i go for a transmission flush? I'm thinking of a local quick lube place that does transmission flushes.

That's easy. Just screw something up that will cost her a bit to get fixed. She won't ask you to work on it again.

Do you know a general repair shop mechanic you trust? Take it there if you do. Would be cheaper than the Ford dealership. Fuel filters can be done at quick oil change shops for approx. $60 parts and labor and other fluids can be changed there as well. The rest of a tune up is simple. Plugs, wires, air filter change and MAF sensor and Throttle Body cleaning can be done easily in your own driveway/parking lot etc.. There are plenty of archived posts in this forum on tune up instructions. Just use the search box to find them by typing in a question, include your year and engine size of your Explorer into the search.
 






Everything I've seen on the subject STRONGLY recommends against having a flush operation on the transmission (or crankcase for that matter) as the chance for pushing debris and small sludge beyond seals is too great. With the explorer, there are a number of people I've read about who just drop the tranny pan and change out the fluid themselves, several times over the course of a few days/weeks to try and get as much as possible. Bottom line, research what's the best way to change as much of the tranny fluid as possible, but it's been recommended to me to stay away from tranny flushes. The fill procedure for our transmissions is a little flaky for the average guy at home on his back in the driveway....
