Well after 387,000km my 2002 ford exolorer finally started slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear. I have been towing with it lately and had a feeling it would fail soon. It's already been shifting slightly late for months.
My question is, I am still driving to work and back. How long do you think I can drive it until it's completely dead? Will it leave me stranded without any gears?
I can get it into 4th gear by letting off the gas but my issue is there is a lot of noise coming from the transmission while driving like something is loose and once it made a loud squeel noise like a old 1920's car horn. Should I get at least a few weeks out of it?

You need a crystal ball man! Keep a tow company number in your phone. Let us know how long it makes it. Just curious. Good luck.

No one can answer that question.

I say somewhere between one hour and one year.

It'll last until you really need to get where you're going, and it's pouring down rain, and cold, and windy, and snowy, and dark.

"The 2002 Ford Explorer is ranked as the "Worst Vehicle on Record", largely due to widespread transmission failure at under 100,000 miles of drive time."

Some complaints say it fails with as little as 60,000 miles (97,999 KM) so getting 387,999 KM (240,000 miles) is amazing.

Not the exact same transmission, I made it 38 miles on a failing a4ld. Lost one gear at a time till it would only move above 5k rpm. Hopefully you get lucky too, I wouldn't drive any farther than you are willing to walk.
