Had a check engine light come on a few weeks ago, AutoZone diagnosed it as a P0300 - "Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected".
* Faulty spark plugs or wires
* Faulty coil (pack)
* Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
* Faulty fuel injector(s)
* Burned exhaust valve
* Faulty catalytic converter(s)
* Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
* Faulty camshaft position sensor
* Defective computer
We've had a longtime issue with some slight rough idle, and occassional roughness on the freeway. Always figured it was cheap gas, since it's done this most of the time that we've owned the truck (purchased at around 60k miles).
I had replaced the spark plugs a few years ago, so due to cost and ease of access, I first changed out the original (130,000 miles) coil.
The light went out and we went for a trip last weekend. About 10-12 hours of freeway driving. Halfway back the light came on again.
So, last night I replaced all of the spark plugs again and started it up. Same rough idle/hesitation. Finally, I replaced the wires. Easy enough, most difficult part was unclamping the various wire retaining clips. Got it all put back together and I started it up again. Very very very smooth now. Took it out on the freeway and the truck felt like it had power that I had never seen it have before. PLUS better gas mileage for the short test drive I took it on. (Easy 23+ mpg)
So, I just wanted to post this for anyone who gets that OBD code and has similar symptoms/mileage as me. Certainly for less than the mechanic would have charged I was able to fix this problem with some newly refreshed parts.
Parts:
Motorcraft plugs (about an hour, being overly careful not to crossthread etc)
Duralast wires (about an hour due to clips)
Duralast coil pack (maybe 10 minutes)
