I know alot of you guys where in the same boat i was looking for a box that would sit behind the third seat, look and fit good, but also be able to remove easily to use the full cargo space if needed.

I have to mention the truch has the rear Aux Ac unit, so any stealthbox ideas we're instantly tossed out the window.. so those of you whom had the same problem, here are a few pictures of what the builder and I came up with.

what you see is a custom box that fits perfectly flush up against the 3rd row seat, the problem with the are is that the floor slopes down slightly and the seats ofcourse lean back. that's why taking a small truck box and thowing it back there doest work.

after trying a carpet that didn't quite match up we chose to see how vynal whould look. i think it came out great.

the subs are 10" JL W1 v.2 i went with these because the amp i purchased is the JL 500/5 wich will be mounted in the area where the stock 8" sub and amp are on the passengers side cargo panel.

Cost of the Box: $200.00 and the subs: $99.00 ea.

i think those picture are HUGE!....

but the box is awesome. I was thinking about something like that for mine but i dont have a 3rd row so i quickly snapped out of that phase.

What is that on the passenger side? Looks like some sort of stock subwoofer? Mine has the cargo pocket and net on the passenger side and the rear AC on the drivers side. Id love to have something that fit where the net is on the passenger side.

Cool idea kris! I am in the same boat right now. I just mounted my amp yesterday in my factory sub/amp location (see other thread I made). As of right now, I have to leave the 3rd row folded because my box it too big to fit in the tiny cargo area. It doesn't bother me since I usually drive no more than 4 people, but if the time arises where I need the 3rd row, I'm gonna have to take the box out.

I am gonna have to build something soon to fit.

to answer ntrpriz question, some explorers come equiped with a factory 8" sub and amp that sounds like garbage if you ask me. so thats what your seeing. if you don't have the factory sub installed it will be a cargo net.

anyhow, that area is where the JL amp will be mounted with a few fans to keep it nice and cool.

White97Jimmy, i am very happy how this box came out, i figured, i paid for a truck with a 3rd row, i shouldn't limit myself to 2.

anyway, although from the pics you can't tell how much airspace is left when the back is closed from the pics it's about 3-5 inches. i can't wait for the Jl 500/5 to arive so i can hear how it sounds!

I didnt know that was an option on the 3rd gens. Ill have to find one out of a junk yard, and replace the speaker and amp. I like the stock look.

I will probably be building something similar, but only half the size (I am only running 1 sub).

If you are mounting your own amp, I suggest taking the whole side panel off (don't try to just pry off the "grille" of the factory amp/sub. The pictures in the other thread I made show that I broke off the tabs. Sometime in the future I will replace it, for now, I have it held on with velcro.
