2002 merc mounty - no air, compresor not moving

My wifes told me that her air did not work in her '02 Mountianeer so I went to wal-mart picked up a can of refridgerent. Went to charge it, read the gauge, it read 0...I have the AC on Max cold #4.. Then I notice the damn compressor isint even moving. Directions on can says add 1/2 can try in 3 minutes. I did so and still nothing.. Why isint my compressor doing anything? What are some common issues?

Well I sucked it up and took it to my local goodyear (i know the head tech there and he is good) $55.00 later and it is cold as ice.. He said the system had almost no freon at all, that is why the compressor wouldnt turn on.
