how many miles, It is probally the rear wheel bearings,

just did rear wheel bearings yesterday has 233000 miles

I put in an 08 rear in my 03, I wanted an rear from 06-10 rear because ford solved the rear problem, I had to drill and tap for the abs sensor, and take out the pumpkin and place the exciter ring from the old rear on the new ring gear. but works perfect. I paid 300 with free shipping and had 33,000 on rear.

The wine in the rear end is the friction plates or the spider gears going bad. This was very common in F-150, Expedetions, and Explorer's. You have to get the 4209 kit. All the parts for the rear end come in that kit, including the rear diff seals should also be in there. You will have to know your gear ratio because they made different kits. We sold alot of these. Not sure what the price is anymore on them.

ok cool i have the 3.73 gears in mine

were did you get it.How hard was it to change over? This may be the way I go to.

High Miles & Gear Whine

233,000 miles?? If no work was ever done on this center section, the most likely cause of gear noise is misalignment of the original gear settings, due to bearing wear and a certain amount of gear tooth face wear.

If the noise has been present for a LONG time, and not getting worse, and you fiind it tolerable, it will likely continue to operate acceptably for quite a long while. On the other hand, if the noise presented itself suddenly, and recently, and is worsening, pending trouble is more likely.

To flat-out state that the CAUSE is differential gears, or wheel bearings, or ......is like shooting at birds in the dark in a place where there are very few birds.

I agree with what imp said.

Im the 3rd owner of it.And I don't think the other two did very much two it but drive it.I have been fixing stuff as i find it.It runs awsome shifts great.Just has a wine and the transfer case is stuck in awd I took the front drive shaft out intill I get a new transfer case.I had to fix the broken black wire in the door and put in a new window swicth new rear wheel bearings. And next will be new rear brake rotors and shoes. And I want to get some new wheels and tires. My rims look like crap from no one taking care of them...I also have to fix the fuel gauge...

I agree with IMP, there is alot to setting up a rear. Just swap rear and sell your old rear for parts, I managed to get 100 for my old rear. so actually I paid 200 for my new rear. About that fuel guage there is an ac/dc converter on top of the tank that goes bad.

Were is the ac/dc converter on the tank at?Is it in it or on top?And if I go the same route as you on the 07 rear end. Were did you find one for that price and what needs to be done to put it in my 02?

the ac/dc converter is on top of the tank, on the 4th generation rear, I had to open up and remove the diff and tap on the exciter ring on to the ring gear. and drill a hole on top of the pumpkin for the abs sensor.

here is a good link with lots of pics
