2002 mountaineer awd

really looking for a answer .not a good car guy but have friends that will help...my daughters awd2002 mountaineer seems to be doing this "back tire hop" reading the forums, and without replacing that very expensive v coupling..can i just turn the car into a rear wheel drive and get a few years (i hope) till i can afford to get another car..#1 will it be safe #2 if you no what your doing how long would it take..(the guy helping me has a lift in his garage)..Thanks in advance..!!!

You may want to also check the front axles to see in the u joints are binding up or have play in them.
