Hi guys my mother has a 2002 mountaineer. We drove it to the store the other day ran fine. When we shut it off then we came back out and it wouldn't start. Had to be towed home. Now I'm not sure what to look for. Has 227k miles on it. It is the 4.0. I added 4 gallons of gas to make sure it wasn't out. I looked a the junction box and I found this wire that was cut. I'm not sure if it's just something that the po put on there or if it could have something to do with this. Any suggestions? thanks guys.

First thing to check is fuel pressure, fuel pumps can die suddenly. Hard to say what the wire is for but since it's unlikely that it was cut while you were in the store I don't think it has anything to do with your problem.

I had a problem recently where my '02 XLS 4.0 suddenly went crank no start. Verified no fuel, but the two fuses in engine compartment and the relay both checked out good (and the fuel pump was relatively new). Almost bought (another) new fuel pump, but mechanic discovered a melted connection in a wiring harness that sits on the fuel tank near the fuel pump. I was traveling (vacation) so he wired around that connector (rather than order new harness), and its run great ever since. Weird that it did not blow a fuse . . . .

By the way, this mechanic used to be a Ford tech and commented that, if you do need a new fuel pump, the Delphi's are far more reliable than the Airtex's. And they are less than $100 on Amazon (at least for the 4.0 flex). The shop price for that pump would have been $450!
