2002 Ranger check engine light

The in-laws '02 4L Ranger seems to be idling a little high and the engine light is on. Any ideas other than vac leaks? Can I get the engine codes without a tool? Any help would be apreciated.

Without using a scanner, or code reader to read the code, it will be hard to determine what is causing the code. You could check the vacuum lines, and listen for the sound of a vacuum leak. You could have AutoZone read the codes for free.

The first thing I would check with high idle is the idle air by-pass valve. I think it is called the IAC valve. It controls the idle and can hang up if it gets dirty.
