HI all,
I need some insight regarding my now debilitated Sport Trac automatic transmission.
My vehicle is a '02 Explorer Sport Trac 4x4 with about 160,000 miles. I'm not sure which specific transmission it has. The code on the door sticker is "D"
This morning on my drive to work without warning the transmission downshifted as I attempted to pass a slower vehicle and never caught back into gear. I pulled over and played with the shift lever trying all gear positions and nothing worked. I did find I could creep in 4WD. I was only a mile from home and slowly rolled my way there. Tonight, after a long frustrating day I finally got to toy with it and this is what I found.
The truck was cold ( it's currently 20 deg F and I only went around the block 1&1/2 times.)
1st and 2nd work manually
The O/D position does nothing.
Reverse feels like it grabs when I engage the shift lever, but the truck will not move and I feel a slight rubbing/grinding vibration from under the truck.
The ATF looks ok and is above the fill line and doesn't smell burnt (not that I have a great sense of smell.)
The Check Engine light has not come on, however, the O/D light did blink for a short time on my crawl home this morning.
Obviously I need some serious work done, but what I'm looking for is experienced insight as to the cause of the problem. Could I get away minor DIY valve body work? Have a tranmission shop fix it? Or are the symptoms sever enough that I should cut my losses, swap in a factory rebuild, and forgo the expensive diagnostic try this and that remedy headache?
Thanks guys
