I got a 2002 Explorer owners manual... finally. Here's the deal. First you have to calibrate the "magnetic zone" that you are in and then you calibrate the compass. Assuming that you do not have an overhead display for compass and etc, Do this: To set the zone (Detroit would be zone 9, NY would be 11, west coast probably 6) , Turn the ignition on. Take a paperclip and insert it into a hole in the bottom of the compass (located in front of the center rear view mirror) and keep pressure until the display reads ZONE. Release the pressure and tap the paper clip into the hole until the zone reads correctly for your geogrphical location. The compass and indicator will reset once you select the correct zone. Now start the car. make sure you are in a large parking lot with minimal or no light posts around. Turn off all of your car appliances such as radio, het blower and etc. Again press (takes about 8 seconds) into the hole with your paper clip until the word CALIBRATE shows up. As soon as it does drive in a tight circle very slowly. (I drove clockwise but I don't think it makes any difference which way you turn) Once the compass calibrates itself you will see compass points displayed as you drive in the circle. That is what it took to fix mine. If you have an owners manual the procedure was quite well detailed (in mine) on about page 16. Hope this helps. Good luck!
