I just purchased a 2002 XLT. The compass display is located with the odometer on th dash (not overhead). However, the compass is screwed up, just reads wackie! Exactly how do I recalibrate the compass. I know there are details of how to do this in the owners manual, but the car did not come with one. Thanks!

I would suggest getting an owner's manual and looking in the owner's manual. That type of thing usually appears in the owner's manual, so your best bet would be to get an owner's manual.

Go to www.fleet.ford.com You can download the owner's manual in PDF format if you don't have one. You basically have to get it in calibration mode then drive in circles. Not sure how to do it on an 02+ though.

Hey thanks for the PDF link to the owners manual. The only problem I have now is that my XLT does not have the "INFO", "SETUP", and "RESET" buttons as detailed in the online owners manual. I have found an owners manual on e-bay and it is in the mail. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I'm interested in this topic as well...

my compass only reads N or NW at all times.

If you were already able to figure it out, pls let us know. If not, does anyone else have ideas?

Thanks.

I got a 2002 Explorer owners manual... finally. Here's the deal. First you have to calibrate the "magnetic zone" that you are in and then you calibrate the compass. Assuming that you do not have an overhead display for compass and etc, Do this: To set the zone (Detroit would be zone 9, NY would be 11, west coast probably 6) , Turn the ignition on. Take a paperclip and insert it into a hole in the bottom of the compass (located in front of the center rear view mirror) and keep pressure until the display reads ZONE. Release the pressure and tap the paper clip into the hole until the zone reads correctly for your geogrphical location. The compass and indicator will reset once you select the correct zone. Now start the car. make sure you are in a large parking lot with minimal or no light posts around. Turn off all of your car appliances such as radio, het blower and etc. Again press (takes about 8 seconds) into the hole with your paper clip until the word CALIBRATE shows up. As soon as it does drive in a tight circle very slowly. (I drove clockwise but I don't think it makes any difference which way you turn) Once the compass calibrates itself you will see compass points displayed as you drive in the circle. That is what it took to fix mine. If you have an owners manual the procedure was quite well detailed (in mine) on about page 16. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks for the well detailed instructions. I'll give it a try.
