Have a 2003 XLT with the 4.0L V6. Began having an issue a year or two ago with a rough idle. No issues at that point with acceleration. About 4 months ago, the engine (only had 67k miles on it) broke a rod and threw a piston through the block. Since it had relatively low miles, I decided to have the dealer get a crate motor and put it in.
Everything was hunky dory up until about 3 weeks ago I began noticing that the rough idle was happening and then whenever the tach got above 2k on acceleration, it seemed to cut out and had trouble accelerating. I took it in last week for service and to have them look into it, said they couldn't find anything and that if it happened again to call them. Kept happening, including a bout this past Sunday when I was on the interstate doing ~70 and the Service Engine Soon light came on. Took it in today and they replaced a coil, because they said that when they put it on the machine, the #2 cylinder had a 10% misfire rate. Verbatim what the service notes state:
Diag had no codes monitored pids and performed injector balance test all passed checked relative compression all passed checked mode 6 obd2 data and found high misfire rate on cylinder 2 replaced coil and cleared kam.
Needless to say, after about 30 minutes of driving, it started acting up again with the same symptoms. Any ideas? Obviously thinking something fuel system related but I am stumped about what to do. Any help would be appreciated!
