I have a 2003 Ford explorer, 4.6 V8 (Eddie Bauer) and the "clockspring" melted. Smoke came out from the steering column and it smelled that something got burned. Took it to the dealership to have it check and found out that it was the clockspring that got burn and partially melted. The vehicle is fairly new, it's only 3 years old with 44000 miles in it, but unfortunately, out of warranty and so cost was out of my pocket and wasn't cheap ($387.00). Have any of you guys experienced the same or similar issue, as this maybe a problem that may qualify for a recall. Just a thought, how can a "clockspring" got melted, obviously there was a short circuit, but how can a short circuit occur in the clockspring? Might just be a poor design in the manufacturer's end. Please reply if you guys had experience similar issue from the past.
