2003 ford explorer had a backfire from the engine

my 2003 ford explorer had a backfire from the engine now hear a loud tapping around the top part of the engine this just happened ????

what engine? mileage? what was going on when this happened? I have a feeling I may know what happened (timing chain slip a tooth) but we need a bit more info to be sure.

Thank you for replying. I turned the car on as soon as the engine turned over then heard the backfire smelled an oil smell. The the tapping started.

I noticed I have not lost any oil pressure. The pressure in normal range. I was thinking it was a rod or lifter but not sure of that.

Engine mileage is 170,000
