2004 Aviator oil leak

I am looking for some info about a oil leak I have. I have had this leak for some time now and I would LOVE to some how get it fixed. It is not BAD but it does cause me to add a quart every month and a half and be careful where I park as to not drip oil on people's driveways.

I took the SUV to a mechanic that I have used MANY times and is a very trustworthy guy and asked him to look to see what was causing this leak. He cleaned it up and found that there was what looked to be a small plate with two bolts that was near or behind the oil filter and the gasket behind the plate was leaking. He removed the bolts to the plate but the plate would not come off. I told him not to get to involved with this plate till we find out what the heck it is and if it would cause any problems taking it off with some force..

Does ANYONE know about this plate?.. Or have any idea where this leak could be coming from.. He told me that oil sender was not leaking at all.

I have been looking for some info online but can't find a damn thing.

oil filter adapter

Mine has an oil filter adapter. It bolts to the block and has a spin-on connector at a 90 degree angle for the oil filter. It is common for these to leak at the gasket connecting the oil filter adapter to the block. Replace the gasket and/or the adapter itself and that particular leak will be fixed.

Phil Here. Does anyone actually know how many "Labor" hours it would take to replace the gasket between the oil filter adapter and the engine block? My Indy wants 400 dollars to do the job,seems excessive to me but than what do I know.

I am not able to do this job myself and I would like to have some ammunition to take to him. Maybe I could wiggle the cost down................Thanks

I just don't see anything complicated on replacing the gasket on the oil filter adapter. it's a very straight forward process with direct access to it (I mean he doesn't need to remove any major components) he's done within an hour with it probably spending more time on draining/filling the coolant and oil. I believe it's not a $300 gasket either.

normally shops charge more if you own any of the luxury brands ... lincoln, bmw, mercedes..

I had mine replaced about 4 years ago and it was about $250, which included replacing the adapter (weren't sure if it was cracked or something), gasket and refilling everything. I think it charged out as 2 hours labor, but not sure about that.

If you replace the gasket, spend the extra $50 or whatever and replace the adapter, especially if its 10+ years old....You gotta remove the adapter to change the gasket, so might as well, since the labor cost will be the same.

Phil Here, Thank you guys, Regarding the oil leak, I have to start looking for a new Indy or at least for this oil filter adapter issue. I will shop around. Don't like oil on my driveway...........

Oil Filter Adapter Leak

Phil Here. Well guy's let's put this post to rest.

With the help from you guy's I got my Oil leak fixed. I chewed my Indy down to 230.00 to change out the oil filter adapter gasket plus install a new coolant hose that went from the hot water bottle to the radiator. Thank you all again......
