Fairly straightforward. Here is what I did.
1: Grab the tail light housings and wiring from a mountaineer. I got both from a junkyard - just had to pull the wiring out for some slack and then cut it off with a knife.
2: Splice in the new light wiring to the explorer. Match the wiring colors. Some common sense is all you need trust me. I thought it would have been more than it was.
3: Use some convincing to get the housings in place. Use some muscle in getting the screw holes to line up, just enough to secure them. They guaranteed fit as long as you find the sweet spot and be patient.
3a: I would go further to suggest getting some double-sided 3M velcro to help the 'front' of the housing stay put and not 'pop-out' a quarter of an inch once in a while. I've yet to even do that, and it only happens once in a great while on one tail light. So it's not that big of a concern.
Happy to see that someone else wants to do it. It can be done.
