I ran the ABS codes on my 04 Mountaineer that is an AWD with independent rear suspension and it said my left rear and right rear sensors are bad. So I looked up the part and it looks just like I thought online. So I went out to my Mountaineer to find these parts on the rear and they are absolutely no where to be found on there. I have a good idea of what I'm looking for, but I do not see sensors anywhere. I know I have one on top of my rear differential, but how can I find these? I've read some Explorers(aka Mountaineers) don't have the rear sensors at the tires. But, why would it throw that code if I don't have them? Where should I be looking for them, because I can't see anything by the tires, underneath the car.

Perhaps it's saying they are bad because they are missing?
Seems odd that both would go bad at once, so, if it does only have the diff sensor, then it wouldn't be able to differentiate between left and right and might throw the code saying both.

Scroll down to the pics of the rear end. If you have the sensors at the wheel, it should be fairly obvious. Even if they are missing, you should see where they plug in.

I own a 03 Monty and I had the same issue about two months ago. The Monty do not have sensors in their rear hubs just on the differential. There is even a TSB that covers the code calling out both tires but only the one on the differential has to be replaced.
Really quick repair, mine is AWD.
