2005 4.0L XLT - Turbo? Super? Anything???

My 2005 XLT gets at most 18mpg highway if it's all highway, Otherwise it's around 14.5. It also picks up very slowly, does anyone offer a supercharger or even a turbo? And to improve gas mileage what are the best aftermarket solutions. Any help would be appreciated.


Oh, 1 last thing. Does anyone know if it's possible and worth it to swap out the 4.0L V6 for a 4.6L V8

My '05 EB came with the same engine as yours. not wanting to spend too much on mods, i just replaced the ordinary air filter to K&N filter. It got a wee bit better gas milage and a little more power. Im more concerned on the gas milage than power since most of the time im stuck in Manila traffic.

The problem with your gas mileage is the type of fuel we are getting, due to the natural disasters that happened last year. Ford issued a T.S.B on this back in December of 05 about this. K&N air filters are a joke and all they do is ruin your mass air meter. K&N filters use an oil charge on the filter and the oil gets sucked up into the mass air meter and corrupts the signal to the P.C.M (the computer) if you realy want to throw your money away buy a cotton type air filter.

I have the same problem as you just a little bit worse gas milage. I don't believe that there are turbos or superchargers for our trucks. But if I am wrong, please, somebody correct me. If you got the money for the swap, go for it. I will as soon as I get the money.

If you over oil the filter I can see that happen,I can't see this happening on a normally charged filter.

Welcome to the site!! There is alot of very good info here. To help you milleage you might want to look into a chip of some sorts, cat back exhaust would help it breathe better also.

Does Ford advocate which type of fuel to use? And except from motorcraft, what would be a better air filter to use?

I've used Regular, plus, and premium. So u can use all of them. With 87 I get better gas milage, but with 91 my engine runs smoother. 91 has terrible gas mileage

Thanks for the info. I have verified my observations which the same as yours.

I don't know how sensative the Fords knock sensors are- but a system test that thecomputers run is a knock sensor test and if your running a higher grade fuel and it won't allow the computer to make the engine "knock/ping" then it might set a code. It's happend before

that milage is a bit low I say... I've got a 4.6L V8 in my Mounty and been getting around 16 to 17 mpg mixed driving (highway, city). Best milage I got out of a tank was 21 mpg but: top speed was kept under 65 mph, cruise control most of the time on the highway, shadowing semi trucks often, coasting whenever possible, slow starts from the light or stop sign - just gentle on the throttle. I run my tires at 42 PSI and have replaced the air box with a KKM cold air intake. That's about it.

Swap? I was thinking about the same but going to 4.0 V6 due to poor milage but I think I will reconsider. IMO 3rd gen. Explorer is just right for a V8. V6 might not have enough power... and therefore use more fuel. V8 works a lot easier. But with the price of gas going up towards the three dollar mark I'm back to my Outback... the wife gets to use the Mounty and she puts about 10 miles per day... and let's keep it this way for now.

You would not be able to get better gas mileage by adding a turbo/supercharger. They use more fuel during boost due to the higher volume of air (higher air/fuel ratio). I agree with you they are a bit sluggish. A less restrictive air filter and exhaust will help gain a bit more power but not alot that you could brag about.

Any ideas on how much does a swap normally cost? I'm kind of thinking to have mine "upgraded".
