Hi, wife's 2005 expolrer has intermittently not started for about the last year. when you turn the key over nothing works as far as ignition. The gauges and lights on dash test out ok, anti theft light is on and not flashing. When it would do this if you cycled the key switch 4-5 times it would eventually start. After the truck started the problem may not show up for another month or so. We have replaced the ignition switch and the key transceiver ring. I have cleaned all ground connections on the fender and fire walls.
As of yesterday the explorer will not crank at all. What ever the issue is seems to be permanent now.

Has anybody heard of this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm sorry I should have said it is a 4.0 but your type of response is exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you.

Typically intermittent electrical problems are connection related. Clean battery posts and the check the connections on the starter.

Could be the starter itself. They can develop a bad spot an work intermittently. Maybe pull it and have it tested for free at auto parts store.

Fixed the problem this morning. It was connection related as I had thought and as was suggested. I found a bad connection in the BJB for the PCM Relay. I also hadn't realized that the key must be in start position and message center has to be reset in order to see the dashes instead of mileage numbers, letting me know the PCM was not communicating. I was seeing mileage on initial turn of the key and assumed that ment I had communication.

Also, here's a link with great info and FSB covering intermittent start problems.
Maybe it will help the next guy that comes along.
