I am getting a 2006 Explorer Limited 4x4 and I was wondering if it is RWD when 4x4 is not turned on or is 4x4auto always on. And any comments you have on the limited.

It should be RWD when 4x4 is off and when you push the switch it should engage and all four wheels will turn.

if you really want to be sure go to a snowy parking lot...or gravel if you dnt have snow :p: and stand on it.

The default setting is 4x4 Auto. This simply uses a live front axle and adds traction to the front wheels via an electric clutch in the transfer case when the rear wheels slip. The other two settings (4x4 High and 4x4 Low) permenantly engage the clutch in the transfer case for true 4 wheel drive. It should be noted that you should never engage a locked 4x4 mode on solid pavement as you will wind up the driveline when turning the steering wheel.

As for comments I have had a 2006 EB for about a month now and am amazed at the differences from my '96 limited. The ride is much smoother and quieter and the new 292 hp V8 makes a world of difference in towing and general driving. My only complaint so far is the 1-2 shift on the 6 speed automatic that I hope to have fixed with the TSB that has been posted here.

it should right in the button if its a 2wd or 4x4 auto, but i'm pretty sure is 4x4 auto

It is 4x4 auto... and I hate it. I want to know when I need 4x4. There should be a light to warn you...

It is called "4X4 Auto" which means it is rear wheel drive until is detects slippage in the weheels then it goes into 4X4 mode until traction is restored at which time it will go back ot RWD. It is a wonderful feature. You get the best of both worlds, 2WD gas mileage and 4X4 exactly when you need it and no longer. It has sensors that check for slippage something like 100 times a second.
