2006 Explorer
Hello Explorer Forum! I am hoping to get some advice here. I have a 2006 Explorer with 230K on it. The transmission went and I replaced it with a nice low mileage unit from a 2008 out of a boneyard. The fluid was super clean and I replaced the front pump seal and that was it for the trans. The problem I am having is that while I was in there, I decided that the rear main was leaking (not horrible, but leaking) and I would replace it to be thorough with my repair. Anyway, I put it back together and it leaked immediately. Drip drip drip. So, back to the parts store and another seal and I was able to get the transmission out in just over 2 hours which I was happy about. I got on the lathe and made myself a installation tool to pull the seal in which I thought worked great. It took much longer to reainstall the transmission but I got it back together and running. I had it running for a good 25 minutes or so with no apparant leaks. I took it for a ride and it was dripping when I got back. Needless to say I was fuming. I used a felpro seal that came with the installation ring each time. There were some minor marks on the crank, i went over them with 2000 grit paper and you definitely couldn't feel them. I thought it looked pretty decent before I put the seal in. Any advice is appreciated. How do I get this to not drip? And, after I do it again, can I run the truck with the transmission out so I can check for leaks easily? Thanks!
