Year, Model & Trim Level
2006 XLT
I recently purchased a used Explorer with 20,000KM (12,000 miles). It's an XLT with the V8, 6 speed auto transmission combination. I have read in Consumer Reports and other on-line editorials that this model year has had issues with the transmission, such as rough shifting, late shifting, having to be replaced due to it being stuck in a gear etc. I have the option of purchasing an extended warranty for the drivetrain, but it's expensive at $1,300.00 and therefore I'm debating on whether to take my chances or go for the warranty.

Anyone out there with this model year and engine transmission combo, have any issues with the transmission?

thanks,

Can you afford to spend upwards of $3000 for a brand new trans if it goes south? I think FACTORY extended warranties are worth it. Good peace of mind. There's a deductible, and they aren't bumper to bumper...but they take care of most the big stuff that could really hit your wallet at the wrong time. But you still have a lot of factory warranty. Will you keep the car that long? Plus, you should get plenty of opportunities to purchase the extended warranty later.

Thanks for the feedback. I do plan on keeping this vehicle for a long time and you're right about the peace of mind.

Thanks
