2006 Ford Explorer EB 4WD Emergency Brake Pedal not connected

I pressed on the emergency brake pedal, heard snap and suspect cable separated from pedal.

Now there is no tension on the pedal and I have to pull the release and pull the pedal back into the disengaged position to engage the switch to turn out the emergency brake light.

What is the best form of action at this point?

How do I remove the brake pedal mechanism to view and assess the problem?
