All 4.0L engines come with the 5 SPD Auto. I haven't heard any horror stories about the 5 SPD auto yet. I have the 6SPD in my Ironman w/ the 4.6L. I had the 2-1 bump but it's fixed now after it spent half a day at the dealer.
Unless you're towing, I'd say that as long as you are performing all preventive maintenance in the owner's manual, I doubt you'll have any issues. My old 02 XLT 4.0L went all the way to 185k before it started to have issues. And believe me, it had a HARD life all 185k miles.
yea i have the 5 speed. ive just herd alot of bad things about explorer trannies but i guess that all happened before 07 i hope!!lol the only thing ive noticed is it is noisy when you shift from park into drive. it doesnt slip but its kinda like you are parked on a steep hill with all of the weight resting on the park gear. but it does this on flat ground. guess i will take it in.
