First off a thanks goes everyone on this forum for all the info I've read as a lurker.
I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 Mountaineer Base model which I got discounted 2k due to the typical radiator/thermostat housing leak. I was able to repair/replace for about $130 and 4 hours labor thanks to amazon, myself, and Explorer forum, the radiator also has a lifetime warranty.

Due to the color of the transmission fluid I'm going to service it so I'm just curious how people feel about WIX filter kits and using valvoline dexron 5 instead of Motorcraft?
Thanks for any input in advance!!!

you really want to use motorcraft fluid, as for a filter, i still use oem replacements.

doorman never of heard of.

Old thread but, the filter on the 5R55 is a lifetime unit and does not need replacing. Also, don't put any fluid in that does not meet or exceed ford specs.

when you drop the pan, you change the filter.

its like changing oil and not the filter.

Sure, but you don't need to drop the pan to change the fluid on this transmission. Also, I don't change my oil filter with every oil change, I only change it every other because it doesn't need to be changed every time with the oil. BTOG has a lot of information on oil change/filter discussions.

right......

you do know how an engine works right?

the reason oil goes black...

lets see i save 3 dollars and get a sludged 3-4 engine vs spending 3 dollars.

wait i think even a motorcraft filter went up to 5 bucks.... real savings here.

lets do the math, 5 bucks more per oil change at 5k intervals, people do 15k on avg a year, 3 oil changes, you save 5 dollars in a year. in 5 years time, that engine will be a sludge monster, noisy loud, and probably issues with guilds/chains etc.

hm i saved 30 bucks but i need 2-3k in repairs.

yeh this does not compute.

It's not about saving a few dollars, the newer oils are hardly oxidized at 3k and sludge has to do with not changing the oil at the right intervals and little to do with the filter. Also, many vehicle manufacturers state that the oil filter only needs to be changed with every other oil change. So to each his own.
